O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high-school student. The judges were impressed with her singing and she made it to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly by the jury. She suffered major defeats in the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up on the third row, and then in the bottom two. The judges were shocked at this, and advised the viewers to select contestants such as Melissa with the strongest singing skills. O'Neil did not make it to the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performances. Judge Werner was confident, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would win from her Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and the youngest contestant in history in the wake of the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
